Bicycle Ride into DC
I mentioned in my post about our stay in Greenbelt Park was the availability of paved bicycle trails in the vicinity of the park and that I used them to take a bike ride into DC. I just wanted to hits some highlights and get a few pictures for the blog. The trails I used were part of the Anacostia River Trail System. This trail system is part of the Greenway from Florida to Maine https://www.greenway.org/about/the-east-coast-greenway.
A picture of the trail map at the kiosk near my entry point is shown primarily for storytelling purposes. I'll let you look up a more legible one if your interested. The long thin green sections are trails and the fatter ones are park areas with trails.
If walking or biking isn't enough, there were exercise stations along the first part of my trail ride. The investment in the trail system is more impressive to me based on the various bridges, raised wooden walkways and elevated steel & concrete sections. The raise concrete section takes you under US 50 and an Amtrak railway. US 50 eventually becomes New York Avenue in downtown DC. I don't know if all 50 states are represented by streets named the same in DC but with the White House's location, Pennsylvania is probably the most famous.
I ended up getting off the trail system at RFK stadium. I thought I'd take a picture of the Stadium for my former Safran co-worker who is a WFT fan.
The day I rode into DC was the day the Federal Reserve met to further decelerate the economic stimulus measures to zero before they start increasing interest rates. I don't know if they even met at the Federal Reserve Building that day but there were reporters camped out front (off to the side outside my camera view) so I like the idea of having a picture of the building. The Federal Reserve name isn't very legible in my picture but trust me. Following the money theme I also took a picture of the Bureau of Engraving since I passed it on my way back. The building name is much more visible due to the way the name was created.I checked out several of the famous people memorials including two I hadn't ever seen before: the MLK and FDR ones. I didn't take the time to visit any of the war memorials. The dome like roof Jefferson Memorial was undergoing repairs. I included the conservation corps announcement due to the infrastructure funding bills that have been making recent headlines.
Love your blog Larry. Wish u the best. Josh Albertson
ReplyDeleteHi Larry and Jane! Loved your Christmas Card, and finally checked out the blog, and am pretty much caught up. Happy New Year! Your “hidden gems” are wonderful. There is so much to see and do in the big ol’ country. Your grandson is pretty cute too. We ended up canceling our trip to Germany when Omicron came out. The AirBnB called and said we should feel free to come but come prepared to quarantine in-house if we tested positive. Is we stayed home; we now use rapid tests for large family gatherings, and I’m doing lots of chores at home. Painting, sorting through books. If we ever move I’ll be ready. Stay warm and safe and keep writing these posts!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that riding is still part of the fun. We are looking forward to more riding as well.
ReplyDeleteLove to see the adventure is happening and will try to check in from time to time to see new posts.
